California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has revealed that he plans to decide on whether to run for president in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom commented when questioned about seriously considering a presidential run after the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable opponent of the Trump administration, leveraging his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would boost Democratic congressional seats in response to redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend interview on Fox News. The secretary disclosed intentions to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and warned eliminating the state's ability to provide CDLs.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," he said, after a recent fatal crash in California involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that led to fatalities and four injuries.

Newsom's office noted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to obtain a commercial driver's license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for ignoring English language requirements for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now transportation chief, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office retorted in a recent statement responding to the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a accident mortality rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the only state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A recent survey revealed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has grown to an average of a third from around 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of previous highs to under 40%.

Earlier this year, the governor commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "no idea" about his plans for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.

"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
