Mikel Arteta remains confident that his side can continue to cope with player absences after disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.

Extended Absence for Havertz

Havertz has been out for months following an operation on his knee. Hoped to return at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his recovery and failed to reach “the required stage.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is considerably steadier and has greater depth,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This update creates a selection headache for the midweek home game against Brentford. A decision is required between persisting with Mikel Merino, who found the net as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who made a return off the bench off the bench. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is in contention post-recovery.

Defensive Concerns Persist

Additional concerns surround centre-back William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Stamford Bridge game. As a result, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are expected to start again in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.

Arteta feels the £250m spend on squad depth during the summer has placed the club in a much stronger position to deal with such absences.

Squad Depth Key to Premier League Pursuit

When asked if increased squad depth was aiding their championship push, the manager agreed. “Indeed, because this season has presented greater challenges in the attacking line, and now the problems with the defence,” he added.

“History has shown us that we must deploy players in alternative spots, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we want to compete at the highest level. And the example of Mikel Merino.”

Arteta's Support for Frustrated Havertz

Commenting on the delay highlighted by Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the subsequent stage and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”

The manager conveyed his keenness to see him return. “Everyone is eager to have him. Truly, Havertz is someone that, in my view, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his mentality, his personality. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”
