Cameron Norrie earned the most important success of his career by coming back from a set down to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

Although he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two occasions, this victory marks Norrie's maiden win over a reigning world No 1.

"Massive. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the latest English competitor in the record books to overcome a global number one. "Coming back from injury last year, I fell in the initial match of qualies here. I just sought to enjoy my game in the latter part of the year. To get a win like this, it's the biggest win of my career, my maiden triumph over the global number one and likely the strongest player in the sport right now."

Norrie, positioned 31st globally, also stopped Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine consecutive finals and 17 successive premier event wins, which was the best series of results in the Spaniard's developing career.

Contest Overview

Alcaraz appeared to be advancing smoothly towards victory early on as he cruised past the first set. Yet, the British contender slowly fought his way into the match by serving with improved accuracy and engaging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, physical rallies. His persistent steadiness and dependability steadily left its mark.

Through most of the battle, the world number one delivered strong serves but he struggled badly to find his timing on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old appeared notably uncomfortable striking his signature shot, which has been the top weapon in the game for a large part of this season, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a combined of 54 mistakes. On the other side, Norrie presented Alcaraz so few mistakes, sustaining his consistency, physicality and power the entire contest while serving efficiently and choosing his moments to move into the court and play aggressively.

The Spanish sensation, in spite of his remarkable success, is has not yet solve how to display his top form indoors.
