The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Shooting
At least 16 people were killed and over 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local police are describing as a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
