The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has resigned as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This follows a legal ruling that challenged her right to occupy the role.
Attorney General's Statement
The head of the Justice Department, the Attorney General, accepted her stepping down on the start of the week. In a statement that the court's "flawed" ruling made it "untenable" for her to lead the department effectively.
"Let no one confuse compliance for surrender," she wrote. "The effort will now reach across the country."
Judicial Challenge
The departure was triggered by a federal appellate panel determined that she had been serving in violation of the law as the federal prosecutor. This ruling is expected to impact scores of criminal cases in New Jersey.
The judicial panel said that a interim role that did not receive confirmation by the US Senate ran afoul of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
Ongoing Legal Battle
The Attorney General added that she will continue working within the justice department as a high-level advisor. They intend to seek further review of the disqualification, with hopes of a reversal.
Writing online, she contended that the court "should not be able to second-guess the appointment of prosecutors tasked with carrying out the primary duty of the administration of enforcing the law."

Prior to her appointment to the role of US Attorney, Trump had revealed he was naming her as his presidential counsellor if re-elected, describing the lawyer as deeply loyal and a relentless legal advocate.
