Virginia's New Governor Makes History as First Female Governor

Throughout many decades, Virginia has had seventy-four governors, each one of them men. Recently, Abigail Spanberger overcame this glass ceiling by securing the position as the initial woman to hold the office in the commonwealth's records.

Centered Around Economic Concerns and Targeted Opposition

The former US congresswoman and Central Intelligence Agency case officer won with a campaign that highlighted everyday expenses and strategically opposed Donald Trump's policies as opposed to the individual.

Early Life and Academic Journey

Hailing from in Red Bank, New Jersey on a summer day in 1979, she moved to a Virginia community at age 13. Her father was an military serviceman who subsequently worked in law enforcement; her mother was a healthcare professional and community helper.

She studied at the Virginia's flagship university, receiving a degree in French studies. After graduating, she worked briefly as a classroom instructor before embarking on a government work.

“I was raised understanding that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” she shared with attendees at a gathering in Norfolk, Virginia over the weekend.

Public Service Career

At the Postal Service, she investigated involving narcotics, abusers and financial criminals. She served legal orders, frequently being the only woman on the operation squad. She then entered the CIA and focused on national security, working covertly and overseas.

Personal Crossroads

In that year, she and her spouse, an technical professional, considered their future. Living on the Pacific coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They took out a world map and asked their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “family and friends reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we decided to shift from a federal career, to service to community because she was right. Everyone we love lives in Virginia.”

Entry into Politics

Back in the commonwealth, she participated in a grassroots group, which works against firearm incidents, and founded a youth group. In 2017, she resolved to seek office, which people told her was a “crazy endeavour” because the party hadn't had secured the seventh district in 50 years.

“But I saw what Donald Trump was doing with his executive power and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my representative over and over again vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act. And I realized I had to step up. So spoiler: I was victorious.”

Centrist Approach

In Washington, she rapidly became associated with the moderate Democrats, a collection of moderate and budget-conscious Democrats. She prioritized lower-profile issues: expanding broadband to rural areas, fighting drug trafficking and veterans’ services.

She earned a reputation for partnering with opposing parties and was often cited as the most cooperative representative of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about political rhetoric that she felt turned off independents, warning her fellow Democrats against partisan language that could be used against them in tight races.

Centrist Group

Along with Representatives a former CIA analyst and an ex-navy pilot, she was labeled a member of the “centrist alliance” in opposition to the progressive “squad” of AOC.

Run for Governor

In late 2023, she declared she would step down for a another term and would instead seek the state's top office in the next election.

Her campaign highlighted ideas of civic duty, support for schools and infrastructure and protection of governing systems. Her intelligence experience gave her authority on national security issues and she described public service as a vocation rather than a job.

Election Victory

This helped her to withstand Republican opponent Winsome Earle-Sears’s criticisms on cultural issues, notably the claim that she is an extremist on civil rights and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

The governor-elect, who stated that communities should decide whether transgender students can participate in competitive sports, cast her opponent as the contender more misaligned with the middle of the commonwealth's citizens.
